" The greatest pleasure in life is doing what other people say you cannot do." Walter Bagehot.
On a side note, boy, does this resonate with me. My entire life, people have been telling me I can't do things: You can't get on a major newspaper, you won't make it to a major magazine, you could never host a radio show, never make it on network TV on-air, never write a NYT best-seller. The odds, they said, were against me.
In my opinion, the odds are against people who believe this complete and utter bullshit. Excuse the French.
If I could give anyone advice who is starting out right now, I'd say, find what you're good at and do everything you need to get to the top. Figure out a plan, examine the steps you'll need to take, and walk yourself up them, one by one.
The people who tell you that you can't make it themselves couldn't make it. For the few who actually have the nerve to ignore the naysayers, the odds of making your goals come true are actually pretty good.
I agree 100%. It sounds like my life... I'm working on a start-up and a good friend and financial adviser keeps telling me all the reasons why it won't work. And I just give her my favorite quote, from Samuel Johnson: "Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome."
